The Birmingham Lady Giants playing in their first ever tournament took home their first, first place trophy Saturday night in millbrook Alabama. After dropping their first game 7-1 to freedom fast pitch, the giants rebounded for a come from behind 6-5 win over haywire 12u.
In their first bracket game, a No hit shut out, by Olivia “bob” Renta (4-1), beat the lady mud cats 20-0, the second highest run output in giants history , and it was the 3rd no hitter in giants history.
In game two of their bracket play, the giants behind stellar defense, great pitching, and outstanding base running defeated the red dragons 7-5, with the final outs coming on a sensational running catch by Elizabeth “shocker” Wheat, who after catching the ball then doubled off the runner on second to end the game and advance the Giants to the championship game, where they once again would play Freedom Fast pitch.
In the bottom of the first, running catches in the giants outfield by shocker and Ka’mya “kmac” Hampton held freedom off the score board, and began the giants run to the title. The giants began to pull away scoring runs in the 2nd and 3rd and entered the 5th inning leading 5-0, when freedom began to mount a comeback, behind a diving catch by Kinley Hall and a great play to keep a scorched ground ball in the infield by Kim Livingston , a near double play by Abby Kellogg and Molly freeman would come up short and the Lady Giants would be champions of their first tournament with a 5-2 victory. All tournament long the lady giant catchers would able to keep in check the base running game of all 4 of their opponents, catchers Lauren Cabiness and Kim Livingston turned in outstanding defensive efforts behind the plate.
Offensivly the giants by Olivia Renta and Lauren Cabiness who were nearly perfect for the day at the plate, Molly Freeman and Ka’mya Hampton, And Cassie Williams had multiple hits . On the base paths, Hadley Andrews , Elizabeth Wheat, Abby Kellogg and the rest of the Lady Giants were outstanding with their aggressive base running that created constant pressure on their opponents.
The Lady Giants will play their next tournament on March 8th in Mill Brook Alabama.
