After going 3-1 in tournament play on Saturday the Birmingham Lady Giants finished 3rd.
In game one the Giants used a strong pitching performance from Olivia “bob” Renta (5-5 ), pitching 5 innings allowing just 2 runs on the way to the 5-2 victory over the cleats, with the game winning runs driven in by Ka’Mya Hampton on a 2 out 2 strike double.
In game 2, the Giants got their 4th no hitter in team history from Ka Mya Hampton(1-0), and 2 caught stealing a from Lauren Cabiness on their way to a 18-1 win over Sumiton 12u. Kim Livingston was 3-3 with 4 RBI.
In game 3, the first game of bracket play, the Giants again faced Sumiton 12u, and again behind a near combined no hit bid from Elizabeth Wheat (3-2) and Olivia Renta, the Giants coasted to a 22-1 win. The only hit of the game, came with 2 outs, in the final inning. Abby Kellogg was 3-3 with a home run and 2 Triples.
Moving to the semifinals of the tournament the Giants this time faced the CS Fury from Helena. Olivia Renta, pitched a solid game going the distance, but the Giants lost a heart breaker 5-4, stranding the tying run on 3rd in the final inning. Exceptional outfield work kept the game close early with 3 assists (Ka’Mya Hampton, Elizabeth Wheat, and Hadley Andrews) and several put outs through out the game. Down 5-2 in the final from Elizabeth Wheat reached on a bunt single to start the inning, and scored on a Home Run by Abby Kellogg, but the Giants did not score again, and fell 5-4.
A club record 10 triples in the one tournament highlighted the day for the Giants, (Olivia Renta 1, Abby Kellogg 4, Lauren Cabiness 1, Mollie Freeman 1, Ka’Mya Hampton 1, and Kim Livingston with 2). The Lady Giants also bashed 4 Home runs, (Cassi Williams 1, Ka’Mya Hampton 1, and Abby Kellogg 2) , and several doubles including 2 by Elizabeth Wheat and 1 by Kinley Hall.
This was the first tournament the Lady Giants Debuted their walk up intros by Casey Motter of the Atlanta Braves and Allstar Intros, which were a huge hit with the team and the fans. ( www.allstarintros.com ) and their game winning March’ Bye Bye Baby March of the Giants.
The Lady Giants are now 9-7 on the season.
