After starting the season 3-0, the Birmingham Giants dropped their final to games of the tournament this weekend to be eliminated from contention and finish 5th of 14.

Quenton KerseyIn game 1 of pool the Giants faced the Stealdoggs from Suminton, Alabama,  in a rain soaked affair, the giants behind great pitching from Quenton Kersey (2-1), and hits from Tyler Miller, and 2 from Mikey McGuire (double) and the Giants left the field with a 9-5 win.

In the second pool play game, the Giants this time took on the Alabama Prospects.  The Giants battled through out the game, trailing 4-2 most of the game. 6 of the 7 scored were unearned, an uncharecteristic stat for the Giants through out their history.  A strong outing on the mound from Noah Hathorn, and 2 hits from Stone Favrot, and 1 each from Mikey McGuire, Noah Hathorn, Quenton Kersey, and Tyler Miller were not enough as the Giants fell 7-2.

imageIn their first game of bracket play, the Giants took on the Slammers from Mumford, Alabama. In a contest that remained scoreless for 5 innings, and the Giants stranding 10 runners 5 on second and third, Mumford slipped away with a 2-0 victory. Hits from Charles Cobb, Quenton Kersey, Preston Jones, and Noah Hathorn and a spectacular play from Joey Schramm, and a strong outing from Quenton Kersey were not enough to help the Giants pull to victory.

In what turned into a long week of roster adjustments and Injury reports, the Giants played the entire tournament with out their leading home run hitter, Ethan Thrasher(back) and parts of the tournament without their all time leading Hitter Mikey McGuire, Triples leader Charles Cobb, and emotional leader and short stop Joey Schramm, but battled hard to limp home to a 5th place finish.

On a side note, the Giants would like to welcome back Culver “blondie” Benedict to the club house.
