The Birmingham Lady Giants posted a pair of third place finishes at Liberty Park on saturday. The 01 Lady Giants posted a 2-1 mark on the weekend, improving from an 0-2-1 campaign in their first tournament. The 02 Lady Giants posted a 2-2 record.
02 Summary:
The Birmingham Lady Giants 02 , lead off their tournament playing a strikers team (with a couple of pick ups) in game 1. In a hard fought battle, the Giants managed just 2 hits (Chy Barnhill, Lauren Cabiness), while allowing just 2 to the strikers. Blakley Burr pitched an outstanding game going 5 Innings, allowing just the 2 hits and 2 earned runs and Kim Livingston recorded 5 put outs in the 3-2 defeat.
In Game 2, the Giants faced the Rampage, and for the second time this season the Giants won 8-0. Hits from Chy Barnhill (1), Lauren Cabiness (1), Ka’Mya Hampton (1), Kim Livingston (2), Blakley Burr (1, 3b), Olivia Renta (2) led the way, as Olivia Renta (5-1) cruised to her 4th victory of the season, going 2 shutout innings,recording 5 k’s and no walks.
In the first game of bracket play, the 02 Giants again faced the Eliminators, with again, the same result as their first meeting. Olivia Renta worked 4 innings, striking out 2, and allowing just 3 earned runs enroute to the victory. Offensively the Giants were lead by Ka’mya Hampton (1), Hadley Andrews (1), Kim Livingston (1), Olivia Renta (1) who all recorded hits, and Ka’Mya Hampton continued excellent outfield play recording yet another put out at first base from right field. The Giants 02 emerged with another fairly easy victory over the eliminators 5-3 and advanced to play in the semi finals.
In the semi final the Giants jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with first inning hits from Lauren Cabiness, and Ellisa Glaze, and a squeez bunt from Kinley Hall, but left the bases loaded in the first. Defensively the Giants struggled in the 5-3 loss, commiting an Un-Giant like, and season high 5 errors, allowing just 2 earned runs against an over matched opponent, in the semi final defeat, and 3rd place finish for the 3rd week in a row. The 02 Lady Giants are now 7-5 on the season and play next in Fultondale on Sept 20.
01 Summary:
The 01 Birmingham Lady Giants in just their 2nd tournament took the field to face the Alabama Legends in the their first game of pool play. Haley Lang (1-1), making her second start of the season on the mound, went the distance allowing just 5 hits and 4 earned runs on her way to her first victory of the season, and the teams first win ever. Hits from Abby Kellogg (1), Tori Layfield (1), Haley Lang (1), Skylar Street (1, 2b) lead the way to the 5-4 victory.
In their second game of pool play the 01 Giants met North Chilton. Lanie Dreyer (1-1) went the distance for the Giants second win, and her first of the season, scattering 4 hits and allowing just 1 earned run over 4 innings of work . Hits from Abby Kellog (1, 2b), Jessie Morales (2) Lanie Dreyer (2), Haley Lang (1), Cassi Williams (1), Skaylar Street (2, 1 2b), and Sara Moore (2)(her first as a Giant) and the Giants raced home with a 6-2 victory and the number 1 over all seed.
The 01 Giants were scheduled to meet the Alabama Thunder in the semi final round of bracket play. Skylar Street started on the mound, working 2.2 innings, allowing 3 earned runs, and the last 1.1 innings were finished up by Lanie Dreyer. Giants pitchers allowed just 7 hits, and 3 earned runs, but some untimley misques lead to 3 additional unearned runs. Offensivly the Giants put up 8 hits, Abby Kellog (1), Jessie Morales (1), Maci Harris (1, 3b), Lanie Dreyer (1, 2b) Haley Lang (1), Tori Layfield (2), Cassi Williams (1), but stranded 4 runners in the loss, leading to the 3rd place finish. The 01 Lady Giants next play on Sept 2oth in Millbrook, and are now 2-3-1 on the season.
