Birmingham Giants notch 100, win tournament

The Birmingham Giants 15u baseball team reached the 100 win milestone on sunday at thompson high school, and cruised to a first place finish.

Fall 2014In game 1 the Giants faced off with the North Alabama Patriots. Quenton Kersey became the Giants All time Pitching wins leader winning his 8th career game, going 5 Innings, allowing 3 hits and 1 run while striking out 4.  Offensively the Giants were lead by Mikey McGuire (1), who notched the Giants first hit in the 4th inning to end a no hit bid, Noah Hat Horn (1) , Quenton Kersey (1), Joey Schramm (1), and Jamie Rainer (1), and the Giants put 4 runs on the board and won 4-1. This win was the 100th in the history of the Birmingham Giants 15u team.

In the second tournament game, which because the Hurricanes were using 16u players, became a win for the Giants. Mikey McGuire went 4 innings on the mound, allowing 1 hit, striking out 4 , and 1 earned run. Offensively the Giants managed only 2 hits (McGuire (1), Schramm (1))

In Game 3 the Giants faced a declining Birmingham Braves team. In a walk filled affair, Giants pitchers allowed 10 walks in 5 innings, but just 2 hits to the weak hitting braves club and left with an extremely disappointing 5-5 tie.

Offensively the Giants blasted braves pitching for 8 hits,( Cobb (1), Hathorn (3), McGuire (1), Thrasher (2, 2b), Kersey (1), Miller (1), and a game saving sacrifice from Hunter Garcia, that became the biggest play of the game, but stranded 7 runners and allowed the braves to escape with more than they could have expected, a 5-5 tie.

The Giants play next sunday at Faulkner Univ.
