Birmingham Giants 02 Capture 7th Trophy of 2014

2nd libertyThe Birmingham Giants 02 softball team, wearing their new look white with black, captured their 7th trophy of 2014 and 2nd in as many tournaments. After a bad loss in their early morning contest, the Giants righted their play and rolled off 3 consecutive wins, marching into the championship game as the top seed.

 

Elissa glazeVictories over TNT, Eliminators 03 and Eliminators 02, lead the way to the championship round, as the Giants allowed just 8 runs in those 3 games, while scoring 27. While finishing second to end the tournament, the Giants 02  have compiled a record of 14-7 on the season, finishing at least 3rd in every tournament they have played in, in the fall 2014 season.

 

imageIn game 1, the Birmingham Giants faced off with a team they had previously beaten, the Comets. In a very uncharecteristic effort, the Giants commited 4 errors, and allowed 8 runs, and lost 8-1. Offensively, the Giants were lead by Handley Andrews (2), Ka’mya Hampton (1), and Blakley Burr (1).

 

GIANT POLOGROUNDSIn Game 2, the Giants found themselves facing a TNT team for the first time.  Mounting a 9 hit attack, and a swarming defense, the Giants got back to playing their style, winning easily 14-1. At the Plate the Giants 9 hits came from Chy Barnhill (1), Elissa Glaze (2, HR), Ka’Mya Hampton (1), Kinley Hall (2, 2b(team leading 4th double of the fall), Olivia Renta (1), Blakley Burr (1), and Elizabeth Wheat (1).  On the mound, Olivia Renta (9-3) worked 2 scoreless innings , and Ka’Mya Hampton closed out the game.

In game 3, and for the 3rd time this fall, the Giants were scheduled to play the Elinators 03, and for the 3rd time in 3 meetings the Giants came out on top. Blakely GIANT POLOGROUNDS
Burr (4-3) worked 2 scoreless, hitless innings, and Olivia Renta pitched the final 2 for the victory. Hits from Chy BarnHill (1), Elissa Glaze (1, 2b), Ka’Mya Hampton (1, 2b), Olivia Renta (1), and Elizabeth Wheat (1) lead the way to a 4-2 victory.

In Game 4, the Giants played the Eliminators 02, for the first time this fall, and the 5th time in their history.  Olivia Renta went 4 innings scattering 4 hits  for the victory. The Giants lead 8-1 going into the final inning, when the Eliminators 02 scored 3 runs to make the score a bit closer than the game was, and the Giants won 8-4. Offensively the Giants received hits from Chy Barnhill (1), Hadley Andrews (1), Elissa Glaze (1, 2b), Kim Livingston (1), Kinley Hall (1), Olivia Renta (1), and Blakley Burr (2). The win propelled the Giants into the Championship game. Mollie Freeman had 4 infield assits to lead the way defensively.

GIANT POLOGROUNDSIn a closely fought championship game against the Vortex, took an early 3-0 lead on 3 unearned runs, but the Giants battled back, to tie the game at 3, going into the 5th inning. In the bottom of the 5th inning vortex’s lead off runner reached, and worked her way around for what would be the eventual winning run. Giants pitching from Blakley Burr and Olivia Renta limited the Vortex to just 2 hits, but 3 unearned runs did the Giants in, and the finished 2nd with a 4-3 loss.  Hits from Chy Barnhill (1, set club record with 7 in single tournament), Elissa Glaze (1, 3B), Olivia Renta (1) and the Giants stranded 5, and finished the game and tournament in 2nd place. The wins ran the Giants record to 14-7 on the season, 46-32 in 2014 and their 7th trophy in 2014.
