The Birmingham Giants 01 softball team went 2-2 in bracket play and earned a 3rd place finish. After Losing its play in game 8-6 to freedom fast pitch, surrendering a 4 run lead in the last innings, the 01 Lady Giants began to put things together to finish 2-2.
In Game 1 (The play in Game), the Giants faced off with freedom fast pitch from Mill Brook. The Giants jumped out to a 6-2 lead behind pitcher Skylar Street, but could not seem to get the last 3 outs of the last inning as Freedom scored the last 6 runs of the game for the 8-6 victory.
Offensively the Giants were lead by Tori Layfield (1) Lanie Dreyer (1), Maci Harris (1), Skylar Street (1), Sarah Moore (1), Turner Cole (1), Jasmine Cooper (1, 2b). The Giants out hit Freedom 10-5 but commited 5 errors and gave up 6 unearned runs in the loss.
In Game 2(First game of bracket play) the 01 Lady Giants took on the 00/01 Cobras. After battling for 4 innings, the cobras broke the game open 5 run 5th inning and the Lady Giants fell 7-2. Offensively the Giants were lead by Tori Layfield (1), Lanie Dreyer (1,2b), Skylar Street (1).
In game 3, and on the brink of elimination the Giants were scheduled to play Momentum. In a game that was shortened by runs, the Giants exploded for 14 runs, winning easily 14-4. Offensively the Giants were lead by Tori Layfield (1,HR), Lanie Dreyer (3, 2b), Maci Harris (2, 3b), Skylar Street (1), Sarah Moore (1), Turner Cole (1), Jasmine Cooper (1) in a 13 hit 14 run attack.
On the mound, Haley Lang went the distance, 3 innings, allowing 3 hits, walking 3 and striking out 3 enroute to her 2nd win of the season.
In the 4th game in bracket play the Giants took on Tsunami from prattville. The Lady Giants got down early and never recovered, losing 6-1. Even though the Lady Giants were eliminated, they finished a very strong 3rd in a field of teams that included 2 o0/01 teams and progress on becoming a team that understands the Giants style of play. The 01 Giants play next on October 19th in Culman.
