The Birmingham 01 Giants finished 5th at the USSSA State in Cullman on saturday October 18th, going 1-1 in pool play.
In a tournament, where the Lady Giants 01 allowed just 6 earned runs in their 3 games and posted 15 hits, while allowing only 9, 2 defensive innings cost them both defeats.
In game 1 the Giants opened pool play against the Slammerz, and after 3 scoreless innings, the Giants yielded 4 runs, 3 unearned in the 4th and dropped the game 5-0. Lanie Dreyer went the distance pitching 5 innings, allowing just 3 hits while walking only 2. Offensively the Giants were led by Lanie Dreyer (1, 2b), Sarah Grace (1), and Turner Cole (1).
In Game 2 against the Mayham, the Giants fortunes changed, as Haley Lang (3-1) went the distance on the mound allowing 1 hit and striking
out 4 enroute to her 3rd victory of the season. Offensively the Giants launched a 9 hit, 11 run attack, to cruise to an easy 11-0 victory. Hits from Tori Layfield (2, 2b), Maci Harris (1, 2b), Haley Lang (2, 2b), Cassi Williams (1) and Turner Cole (1) sparked the offense for the win.
The Giants opened bracket play against the Golden Eagles. Skylar Street, opened the game on the mound and went 2 innings, striking out 4 and allowing just 3 earned runs and Lanie Dreyer came into finish the final 2 innings of the game, but a defensive laps inning cost the Giants a 2 run lead and the game. Offensively the Giants wre lead by Lanie Dreyer (1), Haley Lang (1), Turner Cole (1), but 3 hits were not enough to over come the unearned runs and the Giants lost 7-2.
On the season the Giants 01 are now 6-11, as they head into the USFA state tournament this weekend in Centerville.
