Playing in their first ever scrimmage games on Saturday, the 03 Birmingham Giants took both end of the double header from the Red Storm from Trussville, 16-3 and 11-8.
In game 1, the Birmingham Giants took and early 2-0 lead in the top of the first , only to fall behind 3-2 in the bottom half of the inning. The Giants then scored 5 more in the top of the second to take a 7-3 lead, a lead they would not relinquish, winning 16-3.
Offensively the Giants were lead by Chy Barnhill 3-3(3b), Reese Lowery 1-2(2b), Elissa Glaze 3-3 (2b, HR), Kailey Hicks 2-3, Ali King 2-2(3b), Piper Lowery 1-2, Julia Petty 1-2(2b), Abbie Warnick 1-2 (2b), and Whitney Goodwin 2-2.
Defensively, the Giants were paced by Julia Petty’s 2 scoreless innings (2 innings, 4k, 1 hit) for her first of 2 wins on the day, and Reese Lowery’s double play in the first inning.
In the second game, the 03 Giants again amassed 12 hits, but committed a few errors which allowed the game to stay close, before eventually coming back for an 11-8 victory.
Elissa Glaze went 2-2 (3b,HR), pushing her to 5-5 on the day with 4 extra base hits and 2 home runs. Reese Lowery was 2-2, Ali King 1-2, Lauren Dill 2-2, Piper Lowery 2-2, Julia Petty 1-2, Abbie Warnick 1-1 and Whitney Goodwin 1-2, and Krista Glaze who’s RBI gave the Giants the lead in the second inning.
Despite Giants pitching handing out 8 walks, they were able to scatter 6 singles, giving the Giants a chance to win in their final at bat. Lauren Dill lead off the final inning with a single and the stole second and scored on Piper Lowery’s single to tie the game. Piper then stole second and third and scored on Julia Petty’s ground out to take the lead for good.
The 03 Giants are off to a good start and will play next Saturday against the 03 White Lightning in Hoover.
