The Birmingham Giants completed a 3-1 campaign on Saturday in Hoover, bringing home first in their bracket and pushing their record to 13-5 on the season. During the tournament, the Giants face Freedom Fast Pitch, Killing Time, and Lady Sox, and managed 32 hits, including 7 extra base hits, while drawing 9 walks and striking out 7 times in the 4 games. Their only loss in the tournament came to a team consisting mostly of 02 players, and a pick up pitcher from the 02 twisters. Giant Pitchers handed out only 9 walks while striking out 16, and allowing just 11 hits, and 13 runs, 9 earned in 15 innings of work.
In game 1 of pool play the Birmingham Giants took on Freedom Fast Pitch softball from Millbrook Alabama. After a slow start and an early 1-0 deficit , the 03 Giants got going taking a 5-1 lead, the eventual final score. Chy Barnhill (5-1) pitch all 3 innings in the circle, allowing 1 hit and 1 run, while striking out 3. Offensively the Giants were lead by Chy Barnhill (1), Reese Lowery (1), Elissa Glaze (2, 2b), Ali King (1), Kailey Hicks (1), Piper Lowery (1), Abbie Warnick (1), Krista Glaze (1), Whitney Goodwin (1).
In game 2 of pool play the Giants faced off with the 02 Elite Lady Sox. Although a mostly 02 team in key positions and a pick up 02 pitcher (twisters) and the Giants managed only 1 hit , while surrendering 4 unearned runs, all of which added up to a 6-0 Giants loss. Julia Petty pitched 3 inning , allowing just 2 earned runs, and had the Giants only hit.
At the start of bracket play, the Giants faced off in the first round with Killing Time 03. After another slow start, the Giants pushed 4 across in the 2nd inning to take the lead for good, in the 5-1 win. Chy Barnhill started the game, picking up her second win of the day, working 2 no hit innings, and Julia Petty closed out the win, and the Giants moved on to the championship rounds.
Elissa Glaze picked up her 5th triple of the season, and hits from Ali King, Kailey Hicks, Piper Lowery(2b) were all the Giants needed in their first ever meeting with the killing time teams. The win propelled the Giants into the Championship Game.
In the championship game the Giants again faced off with Freedom fast pitch. Julia Petty (7-3) pitched 4 innings in the circle, allowing 4 hits and 3 earned runs, while striking out 7 enroute to a 10-5 win.
Hits from Chy Barnhill (2), Reese Lowery (2), Elissa Glaze (2, 2b, 3b, the triple ties the club record for triples in a season with 6), Ali King, Kailey Hicks (2), Lauren Dill (2,2b), Piper Lowery (3b), Julia Petty, Abbie Warnick (2), Krista Glaze, and Whitney Goodwin and the Giants cruised to a 10-5 win.
The 03 Lady Giants also elected their team captains this weekend, named as Captains were Kailey Hicks, and Julia Petty. The 03 Giants play next weekend in Gardendale.
