The 01 Birmingham Giants brought home their second straight tournament title Saturday night at Liberty park, going 4-0 through the tournament, running their season record at 7-2.
Starting pool play, the Giants took on 01 Outkast to kick off pool play. After taking a 5-3 lead into the final inning, Outkast 01 scored 4 runs in the top of the 3rd to take a 7-5 lead into the final half of the inning. The 01 Birmingham Giants responded with 4 runs of their own, capped off by a single from Taylor Dawkins to drive in the winning runs.
Skylar Street went the distance in the circle, striking out 2, earning her 4th win of the season. Offensively the Giants were led by Kennedy Jackson (1), Turner Cole (1), Tori Layfield (1,2b), Maci Harris (1), Sydney Chamness (1), Allison Roberson (1), and Taylor Dawkins (1).
In Game 2 of pool play, the Giants faced off with the 00 Outkast. Giants pitching allowed just 4 hits, while striking out 6, allowing just 2 runs, enroute to the win. Offensively the Giants received hits from Sydney Chamness (1), Allison Roberson (1), and Taylor Dawkins (1).
To start bracket play, the Giants were matched with the 01 Outkast, a team they had beaten earlier in the day. 2 late runs from Outkast made the score a game closer than it was, as the Giants cruised to a 6-4 win, and a place in the Championship game. Sydney Chamness started the game, going 3 innings, allowing just 2 runs on 5 hits, and Skylar Street closed out the final inning of the victory. Offensively the Giants scored 4 runs on hits from Kennedy Jackson (1), Allison Roberson (2), Tori Layfield (1), Sydney Chamness (1,2b), and Turner Cole (1,2b).
In the championship, the Giants faced off with the Storm, from Montgomery. A near triple play, that resulted in a double play to end the first from Cassi Williams, bailed the Giants out of a 2nd inning jam and kept the game scoreless going into the bottom of the second inning, where the Giants took a 3-0 lead, and an eventual 4-2 win. Skylar Street pitched all 5 innings, allowing 4 hits, and 2 runs, 1 earned, while striking 1 and hits from Allison Roberson (2,2b), Sydney Chamness (1), and Turner Cole (1) we all the Giants needed to pull out the 4-2 win and their second straight title.
The 01 Giants will play this weekend in Oxford.
