The Birmingham Giants 02 posted a 2-2 mark finishing 3rd in their millbrook opener on Saturday, their 2 loses coming at the hands of the same team.
In the opening game of the tournament, the Giants faced off with the blaze. After a 1-1 tie going into the 3rd inning, a foul ball called fair cost the Giants 2 runs and put them on the short end of a 3-1 final. Blakely Burr (1-2)went the distance in the circle, allowing just 3 hits while striking out 4. Hits for the Giants came from Mollie Freeman (1), and Ka’Mya Hampton (1), and Kiley Cordell (1).
In their second pool play game the Giants were matched against the Dream Crushers. The Giants wasted no time in jumping on the Crushers, batting around in the first inning, scoring 5 runs. Hits from Hadley Andrews (2, 2 2b), Lauren Cabiness (1), combined with 7 walks were all the offense the Giants needed coasting to the 6-0 win.
Ka’Mya Hampton (1-0)picked up her first win of the season, pitching the first inning, and the game was closed out by Alli Parker.
Seeding 4th going into pool play, the Giants were matched with the Warriors from Dothan. The Giants again posted 4 first inning runs, hits from Elissa Glaze (2, 1 3b), Ka’Mya Hampton (1), Kinley Hall (1, 2b), Kim Livingston (2), Lauren Cabiness (1), and Mollie Freeman (1). Blakely Burr picked up her first win of the season, striking out 6, allowing just 1 hit and 1 unearned run. The win moved the Giants to the semi-final to face the blaze.
In the semi-final game, the Giants fell behind 2-0 after the first inning, and fell 4-0 to be eliminated. Blakely Burr pitched the entire game, allowing 4 hits and 2 earned runs.
The Giants will play Saturday in their first exposure tournament in Culman Alabama. The wins were the 02 Giants 85 & 86 all time.
