The 03 Birmingham Giants posted a 2-2-1 record in their first ever ASA tournament in Vance alabama.
After a sluggish start losing their first game 9-2, and trailing in their second game 4-1, the 03 Giants came to life scoring 9 unanswered runs in the 3rd inning to get themselves going. In game 1 the Giants faced off with the 03 Fircrackers, despite very few hits through the infield the Giants surrendered 9 runs (only 4 earned). Offensively the Giants were led by Reese Lowery (1, 2b), and Ali King (1).
In their second contest of the day, the Giants trailed 4-1 after the second inning, when the bats finally woke up, and the Giants posted 9 runs on the board, and cruised to the victory. Chy Barnhill (2-1) picked up the win after relieving starter Julia Petty in the 3rd inning. Offensively the Giants were paced by Abbie Warnick (3, 1 3b), Ali King (2), Chy Barnhill (2, 1 2b), Kailey Hicks (1, 3b), Piper Lowery (2, 1 2b), Taylor Simpkins (1), Krista Glaze (1), and Julia Petty (2).
In game 3 of the Day, the Giants matched up with the 04 saints. In a game that was never close the Giants won easily 10-1. Julia Petty (3-1) picked up her win of the season, and Chy Barnhill worked a perfect 4th for the Giants. Offensively, the Giants were led by Reese Lowery (2, 1 3b), Abbie Warnick (1), Chy Barnhill (1, HR), Kailey Hicks (2 3b, HR) (for the first time in club history a Giants team hit Back to Back Home Runs) Piper Lowery (2), Taylor Simpkins (2, 2b), and Julia Petty (1). The Giants were now 2-1 on the day, and ready to play the Birmingham Vipers.
After trailing 2-1 after 2 innings, the Giants took a 4-2 lead into the last inning but were unable to hold it, and had to settle for a 4-4 tie. Chy Barnhill started the game in the circle, and pitched the first 1.1 innings and was relieved by Julia Petty who finished the game. At the plate, hits from Abbie Warnick (2), Ali Kind (1, 2b), Kailey Hicks (1, 2b), and Taylor Simpkins helped generate the 4 runs for the Giants.
The Giants began bracket play on sunday, with a great pitching performance from Chy Branhill, who tossed 4 inning of 3 hit shut out ball. Unfortunately for the Giants, their defense went to sleep, allowing 5 unearned runs in the final 2 frames enroute to the 5-4 loss. Offensively the Giants got hits from Abbie Warnick (1), Ali King (HR), Kailey Hicks (1), Piper Lowery (1), Krista Glaze (1), and Taylor Simpkins (1), but the Giants stranded 9 runners on base.
Even with the disappointing loss, the Giants played really well against higher level opponents, and hit 3 home runs on the weekend, and Julia Petty became just the 2nd Giant ever to notch 150 k’s in a Giants uniform. The Giants play saturday in Hoover.
