As we move on to our 17th season of play(Spring 2017, 8 years), we are closing in on the organizational milestone of 500 wins All Time (494-265-24) a winning percentage of .632, winning or finishing second in nearly 80 tournaments or showcases we have entered, committing or getting offers for 99% of our first graduating class (2017) so far, this is a look back at some of the memorable games and seasons in our history. There are very few books or records prior to 2011 so we will recap from 2011 to the present:
2011
There are not as many records from back in this season, but some of the Memorable games from 2009, defeating the Northport Yankees in all 3 games we faced them that season ( They were our arch Rival that season, now defunct) all 3 games in extra innings. Tanner Stinnet hit the first home run in our history (Originally the Bombers), we were the number 1 Ranked team in ALL of Grand slam that year for 3 months, ending with a 26-5-1 record that year. The 2011 Giants also tossed the organizations first No Hitter (Tanner Stinnet and Mikey McGuire), the first of 32.
2012
The Spring of 2012 spawned the team that still holds the All Time win percentage for a single season (29-5). This was the year when teams we had faced up to that point began to disappear, with the Yankees gone, our new Rival became the Mud Cats and their recent Univ. Alabama sign Dalton Hall. Every game was decided by 1 run as we split that year with them with a 3-3 record. This was also the season the Club Record for most Strikeouts in a game was set (14) by Mikey McGuire at Liberty Park against the CABA Blaze. The Fall of 2012 began the evolution of the Giants name as the became “SF”, and finished 2nd in the state for the second year in a row.
2013
With the of 2013, the “SF” disappeared and the Birmingham Giants name began. In its first full season as the Giants the organization posted a 28-19 record and several still standing records were posted (Charles Cobb, Most triples in a season, Most Doubles 8, Mikey McGuire (tied by KJ Beck in 2016) including a 7-7 stretch, along with some others. The Giants also threw their second No Hitter (Ethan Thrasher/ Mikey McGuire/ Chris Salter) in a 2-1 loss to the now defunct Trussville Tide.
2014
In March of 2014, the newly formed Birmingham Giants Softball 02(Coached by Kiley Barton ) began play in Millbrook Alabama, promptly winning their first tournament, beating several teams, including Freedom Fastpitch in the championship game(Recap). The 02 Birmingham Giants became the first softball team in Giants history and posted a 58-37-2 mark in their first year. The year would see them finish second in NSA (North and South ) and USSSA,and USFA State Tournaments, and 6th in the USFA World Series (Recap) and toss 7 No Hitters, 3 by Girls making the first starts for the Giants in the Circle (Ka’Mya Hampton, and Skylar Street), and shut out opponents for 23 straight scoreless innings. On the Baseball side the Giants posted a 26-11-3 mark and Noah Hathorn posted a club record 1.00 ERA. Giants baseball also made its first trip to the Field of Dreams in Iowa, finishing second, and turned the Giants first ever triple play(Miller-Favrot-Schramm). The Fall season of 2014 saw the advent of the second Giants Softball team, the team that is now one of the Giants 16u exposure teams, the 01 Birmingham Giants Coached by Kristi Harris. The end of the fall season also marked the Giants first Annual Banquet (Recap)
2015
The Spring of 2015 brought the Giants 3rd Softball team (Coached by Steven Rowe), the 03 Birmingham Giants, who in their first season set the Most wins in a season mark with 40, enroute to a 40-20 (57-30-3 for the year) record, including 11 straight to start the season. The team also finished 4th in their first State tournament. Julia Petty struck out 132 Hitters for the 03 Giants (Club Record), Reese Lowery set the record for most walks (27), and Ali King 52 Singles. The 02 Giants posted a 39-19-3 mark, finishing 3rd in the state. The 01 Giants put together a 20-20-1 mark, including a 5-3 mark in their first season of exposure softball. 2015 also marked the arrival of the “Little General” Heather McGuirk and her 16u team to the Giants, posting a 6-3 mark in the fall. On the Baseball side, the 2015 season saw the Giants post a 24-11-3 mark in their first year of Showcase baseball, including finishing 4th at the major NABF Regional Showcase, and accomplishing a rare feat of 11 straight no hit innings. In the Fall of 2015, the Birmingham Giants grew again, adding a 11u team to the baseball mix. The 11u team made a statement early with a 13-5 record in their first season, winning 3 tournaments their first season. The 03 Giants and the 15u Baseball Giants both tossed back to back no hitters, in a year where the Giants tossed an astonishing 14 no hitters in 2015. For the first time in the history of the Giants, the 03 Birmingham Giants won the state tournament in the Fall of 2015. The end of the season saw the Giants 2nd annual Banquet, this time at the Trussville civic center (Recap).
2016
With the start of the 2016 season, the 11u Birmingham Giants in the first spring season, set the Alltime wins in a season mark for baseball with 34, finishing the season with a 34-16-2 mark, including sweeping all 4 games in Iowa at the Field of Dreams, the Organizations 2nd trip to Baseballs immortal grounds. The team also set club records for HR in a season (Sylas Amick 9), Singles in a season (38, Gavin Clanton), Runs and At Bats (Carson Berry (32/116), Doubles (KJ Beck 8), Walks (Jarod Latta 25), Innings Pitched (46, Jarod Latta ) Wins (Sylas Amick 9) and Strike outs (70 Jarod Latta) . Giants baseball has amassed a 56-34-4 in 2016. On the softball side, the 5 softball teams, including the new 04 Birmingham Giants (Coached by Scott White) has amassed a 101-56-4 record in 2016, including the 2nd straight year for the 03 Giants to win the state tournament (Back to Back)(Recap). With her 16 and 18u teams, Coach Heather McGuirk has posted a 47-23 mark in 2016, and her 18u team is 100% offered for the 2017 Graduating class. The 02 Giants have put together a 25-19-2 record in their first season of Exposure ball. Not to be out done, the newly formed 04 Giants have started 14-7 in their first season in the orange and black. From the very first season in 2009, Giants baseball has 2 players still in the organization and 5 other that joined from 2011-12, on the softball side 6 of the original players are still in uniform. 2016 also marked the 3rd annual Giants Banquet, with Coach Lindsey Vanover( Univ. Montevallo) and Coach Kyndall White (East Miss.) as guest speakers (Recap).
Its been an outstanding 8 years, 17 seasons for the Giants, we are looking forward the next 8 years. The spring 2017 will also mark the Giants 5th annual Rickwood day.
