The Birmingham Giants 14u softball team posted a 4-0-1 record at the Marion Millitary Showcase in Brookwood on Saturday to bring home their first title of the season and raise their season mark to 6-2-1. The Giants only tie came in their first game of competition, where they suffered a 2-2 tie with all out, a blemish that would be avenged in the championship game.
In game 1 of the showcase, the Giants faced off with the All Out 14u team. Lacy Cordell started the game in the circle, working all 3 innings, allowing just 2 runs on 2 hits while striking out 4. At the plate the Giants offense was paced by Reese Lowery (1), and Mollie Freeman (1).
The Giants second game of play matched them up against the Lady Bombers, and for the first time in Giants history, three players (Blakely Burr, Lauren Dill and Amy Jones ) all hit home runs to lead the Giants to the 8-4 win. Other hits for the Giants came from Reese Lowery (1), Kailey Hicks (1), Lacy Cordell (2b), Katie Jo Richardson (1), and Mollie Freeman (1). In the circle, Amy Jones pitched 2.2 innings, 4 runs on 4 hits and striking out 2, and Blakely Burr closed out the final out for the win.
In game 3, the Giants were matched up with the Tomahawks. Blakely Burr pitched a complete game for the 5-1 win , allowing 1 run on 4 hits, striking out 5. At the plate the Giant hits came from Lauren Dill (2), Reese Lowery (2), and Blakely Burr (1).
Going into game 4 with a 2-0-1 record, a win would move the giants into the championship game, Whitney Sellers took the circle, pitching 3 innings, allowing just 1 run on 2 hits, while striking out 3 and Blakely Burr closed out the 6-1 win to move the Giants into the championship game. The Giants hit their 4th home run of the day, when Lacy Cordell homered in the 3rd inning for her 2nd hit of the game (HR.2B) and the Giants offense got production from Reese Lowery (2), Piper Lowery (1), Kailey Hicks (2), Blakely Burr (2b), Katie Jo Richardson (1), and Mollie Freeman. The win moved the Giants into the Championship game to again face All out 14u.
Lacy Cordell started the game in the circle pitching 2 innings, allowing 1 hit, while striking out 1, and Blakely Burr picked up the win in relief of the 5-4 win. At the plate the Giants offense was led by Lauren Dill (3, 1 2b), Reese Lowey (1), Piper Lowery (1), Lacy Cordell (1), Katie Jo Richardson (2b), Whitney Sellers (1), Anna Johnson (1) and Kailey Hicks, who’s bases loaded single in the last inning drove in the winning run and allowed the Giants to walk off with the Championship win.
