After winning both the Play Makers and the BPA state tournaments last year as a 7u team, the Birmingham Giants in the Spring 8u season won the USA Play Makers state again saturday in Homewood, raising their season record to 39-1. In their first pool play game, the Giants were matched up with the Homewood 8u. Wasting no time, the Giants put 7 runs up in the first inning, on their way to a 13-1 win. Justin Hill (1), Ross Christy (2), Brody Flack (1), John Bryant Fowler (1), Weston Morton (3), Lucas Busby (1), Aaron Robinson (1), Kameron Laws (2), Blake Freeman (2), Tyson Latham (2), and Zander Leamon (1) all had hits for the Giants in the win.
Game 2 of pool play saw the Giants matched up with CABA 8u, and once again the Giants scored 13 runs in the first 2 innings, and cruised to a 17-4 win. Offensively Justin Hill (2), Ross Christy (3), Brody Flack (3, 1 HR), John Bryant Fowler (2), Weston Morton (2), Lucas Busby (3), Aaron Robinson (2), Kameron Laws (1), Blake Freeman (1), and Zander Leamon (2) all had hits to power the Giants offense to the win. The win seated the 2-0 Giants 4th going into bracket play.
Seated as the 4th seed, the Giants, squared off with MB Baseball. Through the first 4 innings, the game was a close 3-1 Giants lead, but in the 5th, the Giants exploded for 4 more runs in the 7-1 win. Justin Hill (2), Ross Christy (3), John Bryant Fowler (1), Weston Morton (2), Lucas Busby (2), Aaron Robinson (3), Kameron Laws (2), Tyson Latham (1), and Zander Leamon (2) led the offense in the 7-1 win and the trip to the State semi finals.
The Giants in the semi finals were matched up with a team that they own a 4-0 mark against this season, and the game on saturday did nothing to change that. The Giants offense posted 8 runs, and the defense gave up a few late as the Giants rolled to an 8-4 win. Justin Hill (1), Ross Christy (2), Brody Flack (2), John Bryant Fowler (3, 1 HR), Weston Morton (3), Lucas Busby (2), Aaron Robinson (2), Kameron Laws (1), Blake Freeman (1), Tyson Latham (2), and Zander Leamon (2) all had hits as the Giants out hit their opponents 21-8 in the game and moved on to the State Finals for the 2nd year in a row.
In the State finals, the Giants were matched up with Chelsea Baseball 8u. The Giants defense took over, allowing just 3 runs over the 5 innings, as the offense punched across 16 runs in the win. Justin Hill (1), Ross Christy (3), Brody Flack (3 2 HR), John Bryant Fowler (1), Weston Morton (2), Lucas Busby (2), Aaron Robinson (1), Kameron Laws (2), Blake Freeman (3), Tyson Latham (1), and Zander Leamon (2) all had hits to lead the Giants to the State Championship.
